I don’t really remember it, but I’ve heard there was a time when gold was the standard currency of the world. Now it’s the dollar. The dollar which is just paper that pretends to be of value……and how well does it pretend!

I don’t really remember it, but I’ve heard there was a time when warriors, men of courage, men of dignity were known, revered and admired by the people. Now it’s the actors. The actors who just pretend to be warriors, men of courage, men of dignity……and their respect depends on how well they pretend.

I don’t really remember it, but I’ve heard there was a time when people listened to, believed in and followed the teachings of prophets, sages, walis. Now they listen to, believe in and emulate rock stars. Rock stars who just pretend to be singing lyrics that are prophetic, wise and truthful…..and the admiration they get depends on how well they pretend.

I’m not really sure but I’ve heard that people today complain that they don’t see any purity in the world. I’m not surprised at this. I’m just surprised at anyone expecting any different.

Is money a lie?

“I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of fifty pounds.”

This is the statement written on a fifty pound note, a promise by the Bank of England. A similar thing is written on the Pakistani notes (Bank Daulat Pakistan hamil haza ko mutalaba par ada karega) and on all the other currencies.

All of you might be more learned than me, but as far as I am concerned, I have absolutely no idea

1. What a pound or a rupee or a dollar is?

2. If I go to the Bank of England and demand fifty pounds or ask the Bank Daulat Pakistan for rupees, what would they say?

3. If the said bank chose to pay me, what would I get?

4. If everyone else knows the answer to the above questions, why was I never told?

5. If most of the other people do not know these answers, why don’t they ask?

6. If someone asks me for fifty pounds, I just give him the promissory note for fifty pounds and we all consider it as giving fifty pounds. Isn’t that actually like saying that I have no clue what fifty pounds is, so take this note and go get it from the Bank of England?

7. If there are actually a large number of people who, like me, don’t know these things, isn’t it strange and very discomforting that the whole world is running on a concept which most of us don’t know the first thing about?

8. Is the whole world running on a strange idea that all of us have just decided to agree upon and the importance of having a large number of such promissory notes is totally dependent on the fact that the others agree on its importance?

9. If yes, don’t wise people say that the distinguishing quality of truth is that even if no one believes it or accepts it, it still remains the truth?

10. If this definition is true, is money a lie?

Yes, I know, maybe I am going crazy. But can you blame me?

Pitfalls

1. Want what is good and avoid what is bad. But be careful not to believe that whatever you want is good and whatever you don’t want is bad.

2. Be firm and forceful whenever you are on the righteous path. But be careful not to believe that you are on the right path simply because you are being firm and forceful.

3. Be prepared to take on the world for the love of your life. But be careful not to believe that someone is the love of your life simply because you feel you are willing to take on the world for him or her.

4. Fight against evil till your last iota of energy. But be careful not to consider something evil because you feel like fighting against it till your last iota of energy.

5. Respond when you’ve been attacked. But be careful not to believe that you’ve been attacked just because you are reacting.

6. Compromise where no better solution is available. But be careful not to believe that there was no better solution available simply because you compromised.

7. Always take the noblest path. But be careful not to think that a path is noblest because you took it.

8. Admire and emulate heroes. But be careful not to consider someone a hero just because you admire and emulate him.

9. Criticize wrong acts. But be careful not to consider an act wrong just because you’re criticizing it.

10. Do not shun good advice and ignore bad advice. But be careful not to judge an advice to be good or bad based on whether you’re ignoring it or not.

Don’t try to understand. Just relax. Falling leaves. The indescribable aroma of spring mixed with the anxiety of winter. All exists in our minds alone. What actually exists does not need to be felt. It just needs everything that does not exist to not be felt. Truth is what is left when everything goes.

I would have represented Pakistan in the Olympics, and would have been a celebrated boxer only if I knew how to box and somehow managed to get into the team.”

Sounds absurd? Of course it does. But this is the sort of thing we hear every day from all kinds of people. I wish someone would tell them that I don’t give a crap about what they could have been had they had the fortune of getting conducive circumstances. And they shouldn’t bother much about explaining that to people either. What they should be interested in is what they are from what they got. As for me, I wouldn’t give a crap about that either!

Failure is not failure

Failure is not failure just like success is not success:

If at first you don’t succeed, stop. Take a deep breath, and analyze what you’re doing. Continuous success is mostly the worst spoiler.

It keeps you so engrossed in the race that you have no time or inclination to give a second thought to the purpose of the whole goddamned race itself. Failure is an opportunity to do just that.

Since you failed, you have been left behind. That gives you the chance to see if your direction makes any sense at all or if you are merely a victim of forced labour, the target of an unintentional social conspiracy to make you follow the path, the truths, the standards of success and failure that society believes to be true and very badly wants to keep believing to be true, regardless of whether they are actually the most ridiculous of illusions.

Failure is something to be thankful for, since you might find out that the whole edifice on which the generally accepted concept of failure stands is nothing but a pile of crap. It gives you the time to find out where your actual success lies and what actual failures you should have been wary of. Failure is not failure just like success is not success. Your path might be at a tangent or even in a completely different dimension.

So, if you fail, stop, take a deep breath and analyze. Let the successful ones go by without as much as a glance towards them. They probably don’t know where they are going. And if at first you don’t succeed, try again, that is, take another deep breath and re-analyze.
